COLEAMBALLY

Coleambally, the newest town in New South Wales, was established in a state pine forest in 1968. You are assured of a warm welcome in Coleambally. A planned town with beautiful gardens and streets named after the local birds, it has often been labelled an “oasis on the plains”. The town is a thriving centre supporting over 90 businesses. The surrounding farmland produces a vast array of food, including rice, corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, grapes and prunes, sheep and cattle amongst others.

The Lions Park, at the entrance to town, is an ideal spot for a refreshing break with BBQs, rest facilities and an excellent playground for children. Wander over and examine the Bucyrus Erie dragline excavator, an amazing piece of machinery that was used to construct many of the canals of the Coleambally Irrigation Area. The Bucyrus is still in working order and you can see the machine started at the Riverina Vintage Machinery Biennial Rally, held in August.

Venture further into town along Kingfisher Avenue and you see the wineglass shaped water tower sitting atop a sandhill and perched among the native cypress pine trees. The tower overlooks the main shopping centre in Brolga Place, providing many facilities from banking, supermarket and newsagency to a coffee shop, pharmacy, clothing and giftware shop, shoes, patchwork and fabrics, travel agency and a launderette.

The Tourist Information Centre is located at TT’s Coffee Shop. Here you can collect brochures, maps on the history of the area and information on farm tours that run all year round.

John McInnes Square was constructed in 1988 as a Bicentennial project. The pergola is constructed of local red gum timber and is a cool shady spot in summer. Public toilets are located near by.

Be sure to visit the Jenimar Arcade Mural depicting the history of the area. The mural was painted by the local art group in 1991 with the help of local school children.
