DARLINTON POINT

Established in 1864 on a bend in the Murrumbidgee River where road and river traffic converged, Darlington Point has much to offer the tourist and with great bush hospitality.

Evidence of the paddle steamer era can be seen with the reconstructed 1904 lift-span bridge forming the entrance to the caravan park and old wharf pylons upstream.

Impressive historical buildings in Darlington Point include three active Churches from 1892 and the Shire Hall built in 1922.

Accommodation is available at the Punt Hotel and picturesque Darlington Point Caravan Park providing a riverside environment with shaded cabins, power and tent sites close to the river beach, fishing spots and boat ramp.
The Gum View Café provides tasty take-away meals and snacks. The small but comprehensive Business Centre includes supermarket, butcher, café, garage, medical services, post office and Newsagency with tourist information. The Darlington Point Club and Punt Hotel provide excellent meals, drinks and entertainment. Red Gum Furniture on display by local craftsman Bernie Carroll is interesting and rewarding. Using traditional materials, a purchase will give you a great memento of your visit to Darlington Point.

The local museum, made up of the original Police Station and Council Chambers, with many interesting exhibits, can be visited by phoning 02 6968 4219 or 02 6968 4130.

Goman Dried Tomatoes is an example of secondary food processing carried out in the district, supplementing the vast irrigated cropping industries including grain, especially corn, fruit including plums for prune production. Ripe tomatoes are harvested and then, using a drying technique, wonderful, sun dried tomatoes are produced that are full of flavour and colour.

The unique Murrumbidgee River environment with its majestic river red gums is a haven for animal and bird life. The river is accessible both upstream and downstream by car, bike or bushwalking. There can be nothing more peaceful and enjoyable, which makes Darlington Point a necessary stop-over.
